Language movement veteran Professor Dr Mirza Mazharul Islam has passed away today at the capital's BIRDEM General Hospital.
He breathed his last at 9.15am today due to old age complications.
On September 30, the veteran physician and language activist was admitted to the hospital. He was 93 years old at the time of his death.

His Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at BIRDEM General Hospital on Sunday noon after Zuhr prayer. He will be laid to rest at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in Dhaka.
He served as the chief consultant at the Department of Surgery in BIRDEM General Hospital.
In recognition of his contribution to the Bengali language movement, the government awarded him the country's second highest civilian award "Ekushey Padak" in 2018.
Mirza Mazharul Islam, born on January 1, 1927 at Agacaran village under Kalihati in Tangail of the then British India, was a member of the first two Sangram Parishads of the language movement and had a special contribution in the planning and construction of the first Shaheed Minar.
He also organised language movement at Dhaka Medical College. He actively participated in almost every event of the language movement as a representative of the medical college.
His father Helaluddin was an officer in a British company and mother Canda Khatun was a housewife.
