Interpol helps PBI bring back murder suspect from Dubai to Bangladesh
Dubai Police arrested suspect after Interpol Red Notice request
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), with assistance from Interpol, has brought back an accused in a murder case from Dubai in connection with the killing of a former Narsingdi Union Parishad chairman and freedom fighter, Md Harunur Rashid Khan.
The accused, Arif Sarkar (40), was brought to Bangladesh on Wednesday and later shown arrested in the case and sent to court, according to a press release issued yesterday by the PBI Media Wing.
According to the statement, Harunur Rashid Khan, former chairman of Shibpur Upazila Parishad in Narsingdi, was shot at his residence in the early hours of 25 February 2023.
He was initially admitted to hospital in critical condition and later died on 31 May while undergoing treatment. Following the incident, his son filed a murder case with Shibpur Police Station.
The case was initially investigated by local police before being transferred to the PBI for further inquiry.
During the investigation, another accused, Mohsin, was earlier brought back from Dubai with Interpol assistance and produced before the court.
His statement reportedly revealed the involvement and planning of Arif Sarkar and others in the murder.
After confirming Arif Sarkar's whereabouts abroad, authorities obtained a warrant and initiated proceedings to bring him back through an Interpol Red Notice, with coordination from relevant agencies.
Following this, Dubai Police arrested Arif Sarkar and informed Bangladeshi authorities. A special team formed by the PBI and Police Headquarters subsequently brought him back to Bangladesh.
Upon arrival, he was formally shown arrested in the murder case and produced before the court, the PBI said.
