Police seize 9,000kg of chemically ripened mangoes in Satkhira
Authorities destroyed the shipment of around 9,000 kg of chemically treated fruit at a dumping site.
Police seized a truck carrying around 9,000kg of chemically ripened Gobindobhog mangoes from Satkhira in an early-morning raid today (29 April).
At least 351 crates of Gobindobhog mangoes had been loaded from Jironogacha in Kaliganj Upazila and were bound for the Chattogram fruit market, said the driver of the truck Alauddin.
Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Masudur Rahman said the drive was launched on the basis of confidential information.
"The truck was on its way to Chattogram when it was seized," he added.
Later in the day, authorities destroyed the shipment of around 9,000 kg of chemically treated fruit at a dumping site.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Badruzzaman said a mobile court oversaw the disposal and warned that legal action would be taken against traders attempting to market unripe mangoes using illicit methods.
Under the district administration's official mango calendar, farmers and traders will be permitted to market local varieties such as Gobindobhog, Gopalbhog from 5 May.
