Nationwide tree plantation drive launched, minister calls for individual initiative
He urged all ministries, departments, officials and the public to take responsibility and ensure the programme goes beyond ceremonial observance.
A nationwide large-scale tree plantation programme has been launched by the Road Transport and Bridges and Highways Division, with its Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam saying there should be individual-level initiative as well to ensure environmental balance and sustainable development.
The information was confirmed by a press release today (1 April).
Speaking as the chief guest, Rabiul said the initiative is a government priority and called for transforming tree plantation into an individual-level movement rather than a formal or social activity.
He urged all ministries, departments, officials and the public to take responsibility and ensure the programme goes beyond ceremonial observance.
He stressed selecting suitable species, using quality saplings and ensuring proper maintenance so that at least 80 to 85 out of every 100 planted trees survive.
He also emphasised involving families and marking personal milestones by planting trees to build wider public engagement.
The minister said Bangladesh faces a shortage of forest cover and that plans have been taken under the prime minister's leadership to plant 5 crore trees this year and 25 crore over five years, including along highways and roads nationwide.
State Minister Habibur Rashid said the programme is part of a long-term plan for a sustainable and liveable Bangladesh and requires active public participation.
Chairing the event, road transport and highway division Secretary Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque said the programme began from 1 April across 64 districts to ensure efficient implementation.
