World maritime chokepoints carry about 73 million barrels of oil per day, with the Strait of Hormuz alone handling one-fifth of global consumption and 84% of its crude bound for Asia. Following the US–Israel war on Iran, oil prices surged to above $100 amid fears of prolonged disruptions through this key shipping route.
