BGB, Bonayan sign MoU for afforestation

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bonayan – an afforestation project of British American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh – have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to make the government's afforestation program a success.

As a strategic partner, the Bonayan project is collaborating with BGB's tree planting program by providing saplings as a part of planting one crore trees across the country on the occasion of Mujib Year.

The agreement was recently signed at the BGB headquarters in the capital, read a press release.

BGB Additional DG (Administration) Brigadier General Touhidul Islam, PBGM, AFWC, PSC, and BAT Bangladesh's Head of Legal and External Affairs Mubina Asaf signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations.

BAT Bangladesh Managing Director Shehzad Munim handed over 5,000 saplings to BGB at the signing ceremony.

BGB Director General Major General Md Shafeenul Islam said, "By signing off this agreement, we are glad to be a part of this green initiative to support the national agenda to address the impact of climate change. Gradually, we would like to make our entire border areas greener with Bonayan's saplings."

At the event, Shehzad Munim said, "BAT Bangladesh is pursuing an afforestation program to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. For the past 40 years, BAT Bangladesh has been successfully carrying out this social responsibility project to ensure environmental balance." 

Later, the BGB director general and BAT Bangladesh managing director planted coconut trees.

The Bonayan project is distributing 50 lakh saplings across the country this year, on its 40th anniversary.
