MJF provides Tk5.75cr to 23,000 families

Some 23 thousand Covid-19 affected marginalised households in 38 districts are getting Tk 5.75 crore cash assistance from Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF).

In Dhaka and other big cities, Dalits, sex workers and LGBTQ people who have not received any social protection support are being prioritised by the programme.

The first phase of the three-month emergency cash transfer initiative was started from 17 September under the Excluded People's Rights in Bangladesh (EPR) Programme. It has been covering 38 priority districts with a high concentration of marginalised and excluded people.

The EPR programme by UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is also operating in rural areas. Especially marginalised and excluded people like tea garden workers, plain land indigenous people, CHT indigenous people, fisher folk, violence victims, women survivors, widows and destitute women, physically and mentally challenged children, victims of child marriage, children of ethnic minorities, pregnant women, elderly people and people with disabilities are getting priority during the distribution.

The beneficiaries were selected through a multi-tier selection process involving local administration, community leaders and youth volunteers of MJF's 58 partner NGOs.

MJF's Executive Director Shaheen Anam appreciated the UK's response. "The support of the British Government is laudable which will help some 23,000 marginalised households covering vulnerable people, who are the hardest hit by Covid-19 pandemic and in urgent need of substantive cash support for the next three months" he added.
