‘Historic moment’, says Fakhrul after 208 BNP MPs take oath
Fakhrul described the outcome as a reflection of public aspirations.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed the formation of the new parliament a "historic moment".
Speaking to the journalists after the oath-taking ceremony at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this morning (17 February), he said, "After a long fascist rule marked by oppression and the destruction of democracy, rendering parliament ineffective, today through the sacrifices of the people we have secured a parliament through a free and fair election."
The BNP-led alliance won 213 seats in the 13th national election held on 12 February, gaining a clear majority in the parliament.
Fakhrul described the outcome as a reflection of public aspirations. "This victory belongs to the people. Through sustained movements and sacrifices, they have reclaimed their voting rights," he said.
Referring to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, Fakhrul said the party's "young leader" has already begun working on new plans for the country. "He has shown people a new dream. We are hopeful that under his leadership, the country will move far ahead."
The party adopted several key policy decisions for its lawmakers, including electing Tarique as the Leader of the BNP Parliamentary Party, he said.
Fakhrul also said that BNP MPs will not avail themselves of duty-free car facilities and will not accept any government plots.
