AL leader joins BNP after campaigning for Jamaat candidate in Cumilla
Majumdar claimed he had previously been affiliated with the BNP.
Salahuddin Ahmed Majumdar, president of Kalikapur union Awami League in Chauddagram and a former union chairman, has joined the BNP after earlier campaigning for a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate in the same constituency.
Majumdar formally joined the BNP yesterday afternoon (8 February) at a campaign rally of Cumilla-11 candidate Kamrul Huda at Latifunnesa High School field in Mia Bazar, reports Prothom Alo.
BNP leaders received him with flower garlands, while organisers announced from the stage that "the son of the house has finally returned home."
Majumdar claimed he had previously been affiliated with the BNP.
The development comes weeks after Majumdar addressed a rally of Jamaat candidate Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher on 22 January, the first day of election campaigning, in Kalikapur union's Shufua Bazar area, where he openly sought votes for Taher.
Taher had publicly welcomed him onto the stage at the time, triggering widespread criticism.
According to party leaders and eyewitnesses, Majumdar went onto the stage, greeted upazila BNP Chief Adviser Kazi Nasim and candidate Kamrul Huda, and was subsequently inducted into the party.
Images and videos of the event have since circulated widely on social media.
No immediate reaction was available from local Awami League leaders regarding his actions.
