Interim govt withdraws 23,865 politically motivated cases: official
Around half a million people have been relieved of harassment cases filed by Awami League govt, law ministry says
The interim government has withdrawn a total of 23,865 politically motivated cases filed by the previous Awami League government against leaders and activists of various political parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam.
Disclosing the matter to newsmen, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Md Rezaul Karim said, with this, around half a million people have been relieved of harassment cases filed by the Awami League government.
To withdraw politically motivated harassment cases filed against the leaders and activists of the aforesaid political parties between 6 January 2009 and 5 August 2024, the interim government in 2024 formed district committees headed by deputy commissioners concerned and an inter-ministerial committee led by Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
The committee invited applications from political parties seeking withdrawal of politically motivated harassment cases filed by the past government.
Following applications from the affected political parties, the inter-ministerial committee examined the petitions through 39 meetings held at different times and recommended withdrawal of 23,865 cases.
The process is still ongoing, ministry sources added.
