Traffic at Agargaon now normal as govt employees demanding 9th pay scale withdraw blockade
The demonstration was held demanding the implementation of a discrimination-free ninth pay scale.
Government employees under the banner of the Bangladesh Government Employees' Demand Realisation Unity Council staged a human chain and blocked roads in the capital today (5 February), demanding the implementation of a discrimination-free ninth pay scale.
The demonstration was held at the Agargaon intersection, disrupting vehicular traffic in the area for a small period before traffic returned to normal.
Zakir Hossain, assistant police commissioner (ACP) of the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Traffic Zone, said the protesters blocked the Agargaon intersection at around 11:40am. After maintaining the blockade for about 20 minutes, they cleared the road around noon.
Vehicular movement is currently normal, he added.
Meanwhile, government employees continued their work stoppage for the fourth consecutive day today (5 February) in Bagerhat's Chitalmari, demanding implementation of a discrimination-free ninth pay scale along with a seven-point charter of demands.
As part of a centrally announced programme, employees under the banner of the Government Employees' Demand Realisation Unity Council observed a sit-in and work abstention in front of the Chitalmari Upazila Parishad from 9m to 11am.
The protesters urged the government to meet their demands immediately, warning of tougher, united movements if their demands are not fulfilled, while also calling for a minimum wage that meets basic living needs.
