A Dhaka court today (3 February) imposed a travel ban on former Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) commissioner Md Abdul Halim and Additional Secretary of the Power Division Md Sobur Hossain, as an investigation into corruption allegations against them remains ongoing.
The order was passed by Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The information was disclosed by the court's bench assistant, Md Riaz Hossain.
On behalf of the ACC, Deputy Director Muhammad Zainal Abedin submitted the application seeking the travel ban.
According to the application, allegations of irregularities and corruption have emerged in the procurement process of a project titled "Installation of 500,000 smart prepayment meters and establishment of meter communication systems" under the Rural Electrification programme.
An investigation team has already been formed to probe the allegations, which are currently under inquiry.
The application further stated that during the investigation, reliable sources indicated that individuals linked to the allegations may attempt to flee the country. Therefore, in the interest of conducting a proper investigation, it was deemed essential to impose a ban on their foreign travel.
