The government will sell milk, eggs and meat at subsidised prices throughout Ramadan to ensure affordable access to animal protein for consumers, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said in a press release.
According to the press release, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will implement a month-long programme with the Department of Livestock Services, following a meeting on Sunday (1 February) chaired by Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter to ensure uninterrupted supply and stable prices of meat, eggs and milk ahead of Ramadan.
Following the discussions, the government decided to operate mobile sales centres for 26 days, from the day before Ramadan until the 25th of Ramadan, the press release said.
Under the programme, dressed broiler chicken will be sold at Tk245 per kilogram, pasteurised milk at Tk80 per litre, eggs at Tk8 per piece and beef at Tk650 per kilogram, it added.
The press release further said that divisional directors and district livestock officers under the Department of Livestock Services will coordinate with local administrations to run similar subsidised sales in divisional and district towns outside Dhaka, depending on local market conditions.
Initially, subsidised sales will be conducted at 25 key locations in Dhaka and city corporation areas including Farmgate, Mirpur, Azimpur, Old Dhaka, Uttara, Rampura, Mohammadpur, Jatrabari, Badda, Banani, Kamrangirchar, Khilgaon, Motijheel, Kakrail, Banshree, Kallyanpur and Tejgaon, among others, the press release noted, adding that these locations were selected based on public demand.
The number of sales points will be gradually increased by fixing permanent spots for mobile sales in coordination with local entrepreneurs and stakeholders, according to the press release.
