Tribunal takes cognisance of crimes against humanity case over 3 killed in Mymensingh
Following the hearing, the tribunal took cognisance of the case and issued arrest warrants against the accused.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has taken cognisance of a crimes against humanity case filed over the killing of three people during the 2024 July Uprising in Gauripur of Mymensingh, bringing charges against nine accused, including former upazila chairman Somnath Saha.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order today (1 February) and fixed 16 February for the accused to appear before the court.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam represented the prosecution during the hearing and placed the allegations against the accused, seeking formal acceptance of the charges.
Following the hearing, the tribunal took cognisance of the case and issued arrest warrants against the accused.
Speaking at a press briefing, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said that on 20 July 2024, Somnath Saha – then the upazila chairman of Gauripur – allegedly ordered police officers to open fire on protesters, killing three participants of the July Uprising.
He said that in one incident, a sub-inspector shot a July fighter at close range in the head and chest to ensure death.
"The prosecution today submitted formal charges against nine people, including the then upazila chairman and Awami League leaders, for their involvement in the incident," Tajul Islam said.
He added that the tribunal, after taking cognisance of the charges, issued arrest warrants against all accused.
Three of the accused are currently in custody, while the tribunal has ordered the arrest and production of the remaining six before the court on 16 February.
Among the accused are former Gauripur Police Station officer-in-charge Suman Chandra Roy, Assistant Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain, and Awami League leader Sanaul.
