St Martin's closes for the season, 1.1 lakh visitors recorded in 2 months
Ships carried around 2,000 tourists from the island on the last day before suspension took effect.
Travel to the coral island of Saint Martin's has been suspended in line with government restrictions, with 1,10,000 tourists having visited the island this season over the two-month period from 1 December till today (31 January).
The figures were shared by Hossain Islam Bahadur, general secretary of the Sea Cruise Operators Owners Association of Bangladesh.
He said that the ships that travelled to Saint Martin's today did not carry any tourists to the island. Instead, it brought back around 2,000 tourists who were already staying there.
The ships departed the island for Cox's Bazar with the returning tourists at 3pm.
During this season, seven tourist vessels operated between Cox's Bazar city and St Martin's.
According to government directives, from 1 February, no tourist ships will operate on the Cox's Bazar-Saint Martin's route, effectively halting tourist travel to the island until next season.
The government has imposed restrictions on tourist travel to the country's southernmost island since 2023 to protect its environment, ecosystem and biodiversity.
