Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said the World Bank wants to provide financial support for ensuring road safety in Bangladesh.

The minister said this while talking to reporters after separate meetings with WB vice-president Hartwig Schafen and UN Secretary General's special envoy Jean Todt at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

"We don't want any hostile relationship with the World Bank," Quader said adding that the relations with the World Bank will improve with this work.

The World Bank and the United Nations will jointly provide financial support for road safety in Bangladesh and they hope that the situation here will change within three years.

Quader said the World Bank will prepare a design first and then start working.

He said they have received recommendations from the committee on road safety.

He also said the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will construct a 100-km four-lane road from Jhenidah to Hatikamrul while the World Bank will construct a 160-km long four-lane road from Jhenidah to Bhomra.
