Jamaat to withdraw candidate from Islami Andolan nayeb-e-ameer's seat in Barishal-6
“Islami Andolan played a constructive role in efforts to build electoral unity with us. We acknowledge and respect that contribution,” he says.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has decided not to field a candidate in Barishal-6, the constituency where Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Senior Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Mohammad Faizul Karim is contesting, citing political courtesy and respect for past alliance efforts.
"Islami Andolan played a constructive role in efforts to build electoral unity with us. We acknowledge and respect that contribution," the party's Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher told journalists this evening (18 January) following a meeting with the chief adviser.
"Although they have now chosen to contest separately due to certain technical reasons, we want to maintain courtesy towards them," he added.
Taher further said, "Islami Andolan's Ameer Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, widely known as Charmonai Pir, is not contesting the election, but Jamaat has decided to withdraw its candidate from the seat where Faizul Karim will run. "We were allies, and in recognition of that relationship, we want to extend this gesture of respect."
Taher also noted that several other political parties have recently approached Jamaat for possible understandings on seat-sharing. However, he said fresh seat-sharing arrangements are no longer possible as the nomination submission deadline has already passed.
At the press conference, the party reiterated that they are working to ensure a free and fair environment ahead of the 12 February national election and remains committed to maintaining cordial relations with like-minded political groups.
On 16 January, Islami Andolan announced that it would contest under its own party symbol, the "hand fan," and vowed to field 268 candidates out of the 300 constituencies.
