Village doctor brutally attacked in Shariatpur
According to family members and locals, Khokon was returning home after closing his pharmacy when miscreants launched a sudden attack on him.
A village doctor was critically injured in a brutal attack in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur, where assailants allegedly stabbed him repeatedly before pouring petrol and setting him on fire.
The incident took place around 9pm on Tuesday (30 December) in the Keorbhanga area of Kaneshwar union. The victim, Khokon Chandra, 45, is a village doctor who also ran a local pharmacy in the area.
Damudya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rabiul Haque confirmed the incident, saying the attackers had come to the pharmacy, which also had a bKash section, with the intention to loot the store. However, when the pharmacist identified one of them, they tried to kill him.
According to family members and locals, Khokon was returning home after closing his pharmacy when miscreants launched a sudden attack on him. Witnesses said the attackers stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him seriously injured, and then set him ablaze after dousing him with petrol. His face and right hand sustained severe burn injuries.
Local residents rescued him and initially took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was taken5 to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11:30pm for advanced treatment, where he remains in critical condition.
OC Rabiul Haque said police have launched a serious investigation. Multiple teams are working to identify and arrest those involved, he added.
The attack has sparked fear and anxiety among local residents, who have demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
