The fire erupted from a warehouse located on the roof of the Khaddar Bazar Shopping Complex at Gulistan Zero Point around 5:15pm. 10 firefighting units brought the blaze under control around 6:58pm.
A fire that broke out on the rooftop of a 10-storey commercial building in the Gulistan area of the capital this evening (26 December) was brought under control after nearly two hours.
The fire erupted from a warehouse located on the roof of the Khaddar Bazar Shopping Complex at Gulistan Zero Point around 5:15pm.
Confirming the matter, Fire Service and Civil Defence (Media Cell) Warehouse Inspector Md Anwarul Islam said, "10 firefighting units brought the fire under control around 6:58pm."
Earlier, he said, "Upon receiving the fire alert at 5:28pm, firefighters from the Siddik Bazar and Sadarghat fire stations rushed to the spot."
'Rooftop used as warehouse storing religious items'
Briefing the media after the fire was brought under control, Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director (operation and maintenance) Md Mamunur Rashid, said. "The fire originated on the extended rooftop section of the building, which was being used as a warehouse storing religious items, including prayer mats, caps and tasbihs."
"The building is originally seven-storey, but the rooftop has been extended up to 10-storey using tin partitions to create small storage rooms. The fire broke out on the extended eighth-floor section," he added.
The officer further said firefighting efforts were hampered as the fire occurred on the rooftop and the building lacked adequate fire safety infrastructure. "There was no fire hydrant system in the building. Only a few fire extinguishers were found."
He noted that although the fire has been brought under control, extinguishing it completely may take additional time due to the nature of the stored materials.
According to the officer, no casualties were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire and the extent of damage will be determined following an investigation.
Authorities will also examine whether the building's extended structure was constructed legally.
