Mst Tanima alias Tanni had been on the run since the shooting.
Detectives have detained a leader of Jatiya Jubo Shokti, the youth wing of the National Citizen Party, in connection with the shooting of Motaleb Sikder, the Khulna divisional convener of the party
Mst Tanima alias Tanni was detained from Khulna Sadar Police Station area last night (22 December), confirmed Taimur Islam, Khulna Metropolitan Police Detective Branch inspector.
Motaleb, also a central organiser of Sromik Shokti, the labour wing of the NCP, was shot at Mukta House on Al Aqsa Mosque Road near Gazi Medical College Hospital in Khulna city at around 11am yesterday. Tanni had rented a room at Mukta House on 1 November, and the shooting took place in that room.
KMP Deputy Commissioner (South) Tajul Islam said Motaleb had been staying in the room since Sunday night (21 December).
The police officer said that after being shot shortly before 11am, he left the house.
Police suspect that he was shot by people known to him, Tajul said, adding that Tanni had been on the run since the shooting.
Police recovered one spent bullet casing, five bottles of foreign liquor, yaba tablets and drug paraphernalia from the scene.
According to house owner Ashrafun Nahar, Tanni rented the room on 1 November, introducing herself as an NGO worker and claiming she would live there with her husband.
However, shortly after moving in, visits by unknown men increased, she said.
When questioned, Tanbi gave varying explanations about their identities, added Ashrafun.
Due to her suspicious behaviour, the house owner served a notice on 1 December, asking her to vacate the premises by 31 December.
The shooting occurred in the room before that deadline.
Meanwhile, police have collected CCTV footage from a pharmacy near Gazi Medical College Hospital as part of their investigation.
The footage shows Motaleb and two associates arriving by car and heading towards Mukta House at around 12:30am yesterday. At 10:59am, he is seen leaving the house while holding his ear, visibly injured from the gunshot.
Motaleb was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors said the bullet did not penetrate his skull. Instead, the skin of his head was ruptured.
