BNP-Jamaat more focused on gaining power than pursuing reforms: NCP's Akhtar
“The upcoming election is being turned into a political showdown," he says
National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has accused BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami of prioritising gaining power over necessary state reforms.
"No major political party is speaking about reforms, even though that should have been the central agenda for the upcoming national election," he said at the representative conference of 'Jatiya Jubo Shakti', the youth wing of NCP, at the Shaheed Abu Sayed International Convention Centre in Shahbagh today (9 December).
"The election is being turned into a political showdown," he added.
The NCP leader further said the people of Bangladesh have long aspired to rebuild the state. "Those who sacrificed their lives did so dreaming of a reformed Bangladesh. But BNP and Jamaat have not made reforms a priority in their discussions."
Akhtar alleged that the two parties are instead preoccupied with strategies to capture power. "Their focus is on how to seize authority. Their advice, planning, and activities revolve only around returning to power."
He also noted an intensifying political preparation for the next election, but emphasised that the 2026 polls were never intended to be a mere change in power.
"We aimed to move away from the structures that pushed Bangladesh toward authoritarianism and establish a new political framework. This has long been our objective and aspiration," he said.
