800 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth Tk90 lakh in revenue seized at Ctg airport
The luggage was spotted at around 11am near the Lost and Found corner
Customs officials have seized 800 cartons of foreign cigarettes worth approximately Tk90 lakh in revenue value at Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport this morning (6 December) after six abandoned luggage were found in the airport's arrival hall.
According to airport authorities, the luggage was spotted at around 11am near the Lost and Found corner. As no passenger came forward to claim the bags, the customs team opened them and recovered 800 cartons of Mond-branded cigarettes, a product frequently smuggled into the country to evade high import duties.
With no identifiable owner, customs officials seized the goods as abandoned items. The haul carries an estimated revenue value of Tk90 lakh, officials said.
Public relations officer of the airport, engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, said the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to prevent smuggling through Chattogram airport, where cigarettes, electronics and gold remain among the most commonly intercepted items.
Customs officials said they are reviewing CCTV footage and passenger movement records to identify those who may have attempted to slip the luggage out without detection. Further investigation is underway.
