Fakhrul condemns attack on Baul supporters, calls attackers fanatics
He also demands compensation for Korail fire victims
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has condemned the assault on Baul supporters in Thakurgaon, calling the attackers "fanatics".
"The attack on Bauls is heinous. We strongly condemn it. Bauls are the bearers of Bangladesh's rural cultural heritage. I firmly believe this assault was carried out by extremists and fanatics. Such actions are completely unacceptable," he said while speaking to reporters after inaugurating the newly constructed Thakurgaon district BNP office today (26 November).
Earlier in the afternoon, Baul supporters gathered at the Thakurgaon intersection to form a human chain, when a group of people in the name of "Towhidi Janata" reportedly chased and attacked them, leaving several people injured.
Demands compensation for Korail fire victims
Mirza Fakhrul also demanded immediate compensation for the families affected by the devastating fire in Dhaka's Korail slum.
He said thousands of people live in the Korail slum, and the fire has left them destitute.
"We urge the government to quickly provide compensation to the affected families," Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader further said, "A fair and impartial investigation is also essential to determine the real cause of the fire. Anyone found responsible must be brought to book."
Fakhrul added that he does not consider the incident a conspiracy. However, he noted that such accidents are increasing due to the lack of proper fire safety measures and non-compliance with regulations in various institutions — especially in garment factories and industrial establishments.
"These tragedies could be prevented much more easily if adequate fire safety systems were in place," he said.
