SAD hails verdict against Hasina as 'historic' step toward justice
The platform said justice must extend beyond Hasina, urging that all those who supported or upheld “fascism” must also be brought to trial
The Students Against Discrimination (SAD) has described the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict sentencing Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising as an unprecedented step toward justice and a "historic judgement".
In a press release issued today (17 November), the platform said the verdict fulfils the long-standing demand for justice of the families of those killed and injured during the uprising.
SAD further said justice must extend beyond Hasina, urging that all those who supported or upheld "fascism" during the last one and a half decades, including those involved in enforced disappearances, killings, attacks, and legal harassment, must also be brought to trial.
The role, responsibility, and alleged crimes of the Awami League as a political party must likewise be subjected to judicial scrutiny, it said.
The platform added that full justice for the "genocide and crimes against humanity committed by fascist Hasina" can only be ensured through the swift execution of the verdict.
It called on the interim government to take immediate steps to bring back fugitive Hasina and other accused individuals to Bangladesh through Interpol assistance and existing international legal procedures so the declared sentences can be implemented without delay.
