Adviser stresses ensuring dignity of senior citizens
Adviser to the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Sharmin S Murshid, has emphasised the need to ensure a dignified and fulfilling life for elderly persons, saying, "The elderly are our guides. Giving respect is inseparable from receiving it. We must honour them."
She made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest at a rally and discussion held today in Agargaon, organised by the Department of Social Services to mark the 35th International Day of Older Persons.
The event was presided over by Director General of the Department of Social Services Md Saidur Rahman Khan, while Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Momtaz Ahmed ndc, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf, President of the Bangladesh Association for the Aged and Institute of Geriatric Medicine (BAAIGM) Bir Muktijoddha Md Shamsul Haque, General Secretary Bir Muktijoddha Md Entezar Rahman, and Director (Administration and Finance) of the Department of Social Services Mohammad Abdul Hamid Mia attended as special guests.
The keynote paper was presented by Manju Ara Begum, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Association for the Aged and Institute of Geriatric Medicine (BAAIGM).
Referring to this year's theme of the International Day of Older Persons — "Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights" — Sharmin S Murshid said the Bangladeshi people have traditionally shown respect to the elderly, which reflects the nation's core values. However, she noted that social values are changing and need to be reinforced.
"The elderly should live honourably within their families. We must work to establish community-based care systems similar to those in developed countries, even within rural mindsets," she said. "Sooner or later, we will have to move in this direction. The observance of the Day should also evolve — future events should bring together both the young and the elderly to share experiences and build mutual understanding."
Senior Secretary Momtaz Ahmed ndc and Secretary Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf highlighted the importance of ensuring the rights, health, and aspirations of elderly citizens. They recalled the contributions of senior citizens and reaffirmed society's responsibility towards them. They also reiterated the Department of Social Services' commitment to improving the quality of life of elderly persons through collective efforts.
Earlier, a rally was held to mark the occasion, led by Adviser Sharmin S Murshid. Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf, Director General of the Department of Social Services Md Saidur Rahman Khan, officials and employees of both ministries, and elderly participants joined the rally.
