Emma Stone’s Bugonia premieres at Venice

Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos's new film Bugonia premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, with star Emma Stone calling it a "funny and fucked up" vision of today's world. Lanthimos and Stone last appeared in Venice with Poor Things (2023), which won the Golden Lion and four Oscars.
The dark comic thriller follows two cousins, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, who kidnap a pharmaceutical CEO (Stone), believing she is an alien out to destroy humanity. Despite the bizarre premise, Lanthimos said the story reflects real-world disconnection, wars, climate change, and technological anxieties.
Based on Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 Save the Green Planet!, the remake also questions alien life. Stone admitted she believes in extraterrestrials, adding the film's physical demands included shaving her head. She praised her ongoing collaboration with Lanthimos, describing their sets as "comforting and safe."
Bugonia is one of 21 films competing for the Golden Lion.
