A 15-year-old schoolboy was beaten to death in a mob attack in Chattogram's Fatikchhari upazila in the early hours of today (22 August) on suspicion of theft.
The incident took place around 3am at Sagor Ali Talukdar Bari in ward-5 of Kanchannagar Union.
The deceased, identified as Md Mahin, was a seventh-grade student at Kanchannagar High School and the son of local resident Md Mona.
Confirming the incident to The Business Standard, Fatikchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nur Ahmed said, ""We recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. Propaganda was spread, labelling the boy as a thief before he was beaten to death. The family will file a case."
According to locals, a group was attempting to steal in the area when residents chased them down. Mahin and two others were caught, and an enraged mob began beating them. Mahin died on the spot, while two others were critically injured. Tension has since gripped the area following the killing.
Mahin's father, Md Mona, told media that his son had been falsely accused and brutally murdered. "They [locals] claimed Mahin took money. I told them if he did, I would repay it. But they didn't spare him. They killed my boy. I demand justice from the authorities."
