Knee-deep water, traffic chaos: Dhaka struggles after morning downpour
Many were seen wading through knee-deep water on the roads and alleys.

Office-goers and students going to sit for HSC and equivalent exams suffered significantly this morning (17 August) after a massive downpour caused severe waterlogging, disrupting vehicular movement in various areas of Dhaka city.
Around 10:30am, hundreds of vehicles were seen stuck in a traffic jam on the road from Taltola to Mirpur-10. Not only this road, but waterlogging also plagued the roads and alleyways in Kalshi, Mirpur-11, and the surrounding areas.
Public transport was heavily disrupted due to the rain in the morning. Vehicles from Mirpur-10 to Agargaon were seen moving slowly because of the waterlogging.
Similar waterlogging and public suffering were reported from many areas of the capital city as well.
Many were seen wading through knee-deep water on the roads and alleys.
Private job holder Abidul Islam told The Business Standard, "To avoid wading through the water, I had to pay Tk50 in a rickshaw to get to the office, which is within walking distance from my home."
Another office-goer, Rafiqul, got completely soaked after riding a motorcycle on the waterlogged road on his way to the office.
He said, "I couldn't even go to the office as my motorcycle broke down midway. So I'm going back home, wading waist-deep water."
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded 50mm of rainfall between 6am and 9am today. By 10am, Dhaka's weather had returned to normal.
BMD Assistant Meteorologist Afruza Sultana told TBS, "In the last 24 hours (till 12pm), Dhaka recorded 52mm rainfall, of which 50mm was recorded in the morning. The weather will remain generally sunny today, with no chance of further rain."
