The bomb disposal unit of the police's Anti-Terrorism Unit destroyed 60 hand grenades in an operation in Poragacha union of Naria in Shariatpur in the early hours of today (15 August)
The first batch of 24 grenades was destroyed through controlled explosions at 12:45am today, followed by the remaining 36 in the second stage.
Additional Superintendent of police Mohoram Ali of the bomb disposal unit said, "All 60 grenades were handmade and recently manufactured. Each contained marbles and small nails, making them powerful despite their small size."
Around 9pm yesterday (14 August), a seven-member bomb disposal team arrived from Dhaka at Poragacha union. The recovered grenades were loaded onto a vehicle and transported to the field of Mohishkhola High School in Moktarerchar Union, where they were neutralised.
Naria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aslam Uddin said, "There were concerns about possible acts of sabotage in several districts centring on 15 August and Shariatpur was among those on the list. Acting on secret information, police recovered the explosives, which were later destroyed by the bomb disposal unit."
"Preliminary investigations suggest the grenades were likely intended for subversive activities related to 15 August," he added.
Earlier, at around 2pm yesterday, police recovered five buckets filled with hand grenades from Poragacha union in Moktarerchar of Naria. Police believe they were made to carry out sabotage around 15 August.
