3 abducted in Patiya hills, released after families pay Tk2.70 lakh in ransom

Three men were abducted by armed criminals from Ghuna Hill under Kelishahar Union in Chattogram's Patiya Upazila yesterday (8 August). They were held hostage for about 14 hours, during which they were severely beaten, and released after their families paid a ransom of Tk2.7 lakh.
The victims were identified as Md Naser, 40, Palash Shil, 33, and Raju Shil, 25.
Patiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nuruzzaman told The Business Standard that they have heard about the incident. "However, no complaint has been filed yet. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is lodged."
According to locals, armed assailants abducted the three men and took them deep into the forest after they went to the hills around 9am yesterday to work in a garden.
The abductors later called their families over the phone and demanded ransoms.
Palash and Raju's families paid Tk1.2 lakh, while Naser's family paid Tk1.5 lakh. The victims were freed around 11pm same day after the abductors received the money.
It could not be learned immediately how the families paid the money.
Palash's brother Biplob Shil said, "The three men were severely beaten when they were held hostage. The abductors had also threatened to kill them."
