A schoolboy drowned while bathing in the sea at Cox's Bazar's Shaibal Point today (16 July), marking yet another tragic incident at the country's most visited beach.

The deceased was identified as Raiyan Nur Abu Samim, an eighth-grade student at Cox's Bazar Government Boys' High School and the son of Mohammad Ismail from the Boidyaghona area of the city.

Confirming the incident, beach lifeguard Osman Gani said, "A group of 7-8 students went for a bath at Shaibal Point around 11am after playing football on the school grounds. There are no lifeguards deployed at that section of the beach."

According to Gani, strong waves swept Raiyan under, causing him to swallow a large amount of water and lose consciousness.

"He was rescued in a critical state by fish collectors and personnel from the air force. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead," he added.

This incident raises the death toll from sea bathing at Cox's Bazar to 12 in the past year.

On 8 July, three students were swept away by waves around 7am. While the bodies of two were recovered, one of the victims, Aritra Hasan, remains missing.
