The High Court today (14 July) issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain why Tk1.5 crore in compensation should not be paid to the families of each of the six people killed in a tragic road accident at the Dhaleshwari toll plaza on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in December last year.

The High Court bench of Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Aynun Nahar Siddiqua issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by members of the victims' families.

Concerned government authorities and the owners of the transport company involved were directed to respond to the rule within four weeks.

Advocates Fazlur Rahman, Shamsur Rahman Badol, Ripon Chowdhury, and Abdur Razzak moved for the petitioners in court.

The accident occurred on 27 December 2024, when a reckless passenger bus of Bepari Paribahan rammed into three stationary vehicles — a private car, a motorcycle, and a microbus — waiting to pay toll at the Dhaleshwari plaza.

A child on the motorcycle died on the spot. Four others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospitals in Dhaka. Another victim later died at the hospital, bringing the death toll to six.

Following the incident, the victims' families filed a writ petition seeking compensation for the loss of lives.
