Adil Chowdhury appointed Managing Director of National Bank

Mr Adil Chowdhury assumed the role of Managing Director of National Bank PLC on 7 July 2025. Bringing over 25 years of extensive experience across domestic and international banking institutions, Mr Chowdhury is widely recognised for his leadership, transformational expertise, and unwavering commitment to sustainable growth.
His appointment marks a significant chapter for National Bank PLC—the country's first private sector bank fully owned by Bangladeshi nationals—as it embarks on a mission to restore financial stability and regain public confidence.
Renowned in the local banking sector, Mr Chowdhury emphasises strong ethical standards, operational excellence, and employee development. He advocates fostering a culture of accountability and work-life balance, rewarding dedication and high performance throughout the organisation.
Prior to joining National Bank, Mr Chowdhury served as President and Managing Director of Bank Asia PLC, where under his leadership the bank achieved record profit growth and expanded its digital banking footprint significantly. His focus on operational efficiency, governance enhancement, and distressed asset recovery contributed to Bank Asia becoming the country's second most profitable bank by the end of 2022.
Mr Chowdhury's distinguished career includes over 15 years of international leadership roles across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Before returning to Bangladesh in 2020 as Deputy Managing Director of Bank Asia, he held key positions at The Bank of Nova Scotia in Hong Kong and Singapore, managing strategic initiatives. Earlier in his career, he worked with Credit Agricole Indosuez and American Express Bank in Dhaka and established the Treasury Department at Scotiabank's Dhaka branch.
His international portfolio features management of a US$9 billion funding book and close collaboration with central banks and government investment agencies. This global exposure has provided him with deep expertise in regulatory frameworks, risk management, and enterprise-wide banking operations—knowledge that will be invaluable in steering National Bank's transformation.
Mr Chowdhury holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (VLSI Design) from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Canada. He has also completed multiple international certifications in financial markets regulation and practices.
