Vegetable prices have gone up by Tk10–20 per kg in Dhaka over the past week while chicken and egg prices have declined.
Meanwhile, rice prices have remained unchanged at their elevated post-Eid levels.
Traders attributed the vegetable price hike to low supply caused by continued rainfall.
"Farmers harvest fewer vegetables when it rains continuously. Many fields are also damaged. That is why prices always go up during the rainy season," said Taijul Islam, a mobile vendor in Shahjadpur.
Visits to markets in Shahjadpur, Notun Bazar, Badda, and Rampura today showed that ridged gourd, taro stem, long bean, okra, spiny gourd, brinjal, cucumber, cauliflower, and cabbage were being sold at Tk80–100 per kg.
Tomato, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, snake gourd, and sponge gourd were priced between Tk60–80 per kg. Papaya was selling at Tk40 per kg, while green chillies were going for Tk140–160.
Rice prices, which had increased after Eid-ul-Adha last month, have not dropped.
Miniket rice is currently selling at Tk80–82 per kg, up from Tk72–74 before Eid. Mozammel Miniket has risen from Tk75 to Tk88–90 per kg.
Among medium varieties, BRRI-28, BRRI-29, and Paijam rice are priced at Tk60–64 after a Tk4 hike per kg. The price of Swarna, a coarse rice variety, has increased by Tk2–3 to Tk57–58 per kg.
Prices of kitchen essentials like onion, garlic, ginger, and potato remained stable. Onion was selling at Tk55–60, garlic at Tk120–200, ginger at Tk140–160, and potato at Tk25–30 per kg.
Meanwhile, broiler chicken was being sold at Tk150–160 per kg, down by Tk10 from last week. Sonali chicken was priced at Tk300–320 per kg. A dozen eggs was selling for Tk120.
However, traders said the current prices are causing losses to poultry farmers.
"Chicken and eggs cannot be produced at these prices. Farmers face losses," said Ibrahim Hossain, a poultry seller in Shahjadpur.
