A Dhaka court has rejected the bail application of former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in a case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over allegations of sedition and conducting a farcical election in 2018.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefat Ullah issued the order today (2 July) following a bail hearing.

Advocate Tawhidul Islam Sojib, representing Nurul Huda, confirmed the matter, saying, "We presented several substantial grounds in favour of granting bail to Huda. However, after the hearing, the court denied the application".

Nurul Huda was detained on the evening of 22 June by local residents at his residence in Sector 5, Uttara, Dhaka, and was subsequently handed over to the police. Following an eight-day remand, he gave a confessional statement before the court on 1 July.

In connection with the same case, another former CEC, Kazi Habibul Awal, was sent to prison on 29 June after completing a three-day remand.

The case was filed on 22 June by Md Salah Uddin Khan, a member of the BNP National Executive Committee, accusing 24 individuals — including former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda, and Kazi Habibul Awal — accusing them of influencing and orchestrating fraudulent elections during the 10th to 12th parliamentary terms.

On 25 June, the case was expanded to include additional charges of sedition, fraud, and embezzlement.
