Police recovered the bodies of three members of a family from a room at "Sweet Dream" hotel in the Moghbazar area of the capital this morning (29 June).

The deceased were identified as Monir Hossain, 45, his wife Swapna Begum, 38, and their son Arafat Hossain Naim, 18.

All of them were residents of Ramganj upazila in Lakshmipur district, police said.

Confirming the incident, Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Ramna Division, said the cause of death is initially suspected to be food poisoning, but the exact reason will be known after autopsies are completed.

According to police, the family had traveled to Dhaka from Lakshmipur for medical treatment. Failing to secure a doctor's appointment, they decided to stay overnight at the hotel.

"This morning, Monir Hossain called his relatives and informed them that all three were feeling sick and vomiting," said DC Masud. "Relatives rushed to the hotel and then informed the police."

Initial investigation suggests that Swapna and Naim died inside the hotel room, while Monir was taken to nearby Ad-Din Hospital, where he was announced dead after being moved to the ICU.

Police said a full investigation is underway.

Quoting the deceased's family, neighbour Mahi Uddin said that expatriate Monir Hossain had come to Dhaka to seek treatment for his son.

Around 11pm, the family had dinner together, after which all three began to feel unwell.

Locals later rescued them and took them to the hospital, where all three were pronounced dead between 11am and 12pm today, Mahi Uddin said.
