JUCSU polls postponed again, now set for 11 September

The Jahangirnagar University authorities have once again rescheduled the election of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU), setting a new possible date for 11 September 2025.
The decision was taken following a prolonged meeting held at the university's administrative building on Thursday evening, which continued for nearly ten hours. Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan announced the new date shortly before midnight.
He said the decision was taken as the university authorities could not complete the trial process of those involved in the July 2024 campus attacks as per the earlier announced roadmap.
Revised roadmap declared
Speaking at the meeting, the vice-chancellor said, "As per the newly announced plan, the final decisions in the trial of the temporarily suspended students accused in the incident will be given by 4 August. On the same day, the new schedule for the JUCSU election will also be announced."
"The trial of the teachers accused of supporting the attacks will be completed by August 31, 2025. After that, the long-awaited JUCSU and Hall Union elections are scheduled to be held on 11 September," he added.
The university authorities also informed that with the change in the election date, the previous Election Commission is no longer valid. A new commission will be formed, and a fresh election timetable will be announced in line with the updated plan.
Reactions from student organisations
Following the announcement, student organisations expressed mixed reactions. While some welcomed the decision, others criticised the administration for the repeated delays.
Mostafizur Rahman, Secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jahangirnagar University unit, accused the authorities of deliberately postponing the JUCSU election. He said, "We are giving the administration one last chance. If the trials and election are not completed within the new timeframe, we will take necessary steps.
"Similarly, Arifuzzaman Uzzal, Convener of the Ganatantrik Chhatrasangsad, Jahangirnagar University unit, said, "The administration has often tried to delay the election by linking it with the justice process."
"Several election dates have been postponed for this reason. Still, for the last time, we want to trust this post-uprising administration. We hope they will not betray the students like previous authorities, who acted under autocratic governments," he added.
Earlier,The Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election date was set for July 31, 2025. The decision was announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan on April 30 during a press conference at the council room of the university's administrative building.
