Zelensky said on social media that the meeting was "long and substantive", adding. "We discussed how to achieve a ceasefire and a real peace. We spoke about how to protect our people."

A source in the Ukrainian presidency told AFP Zelensky was "satisfied with the conversation and grateful to Trump." The Ukrainian leader's office said separately the meeting had lasted around 50 minutes.

'It was very nice,' Trump says of Zelenskiy meeting

When asked if he discussed a ceasefire with Zelenskiy at the summit, Trump said, "No, no, I just, I wanted to know how he's doing."

"It was very nice, actually. You know, we had little rough times," Trump said of their meeting. But he said Zelenskiy "couldn't have been nicer."

"I think he'd like to see an end to this," said Trump, speaking of the war with Russia, reports Reuters.

"I'm going to speak to Vladimir Putin, see if we can get it ended."
