Webinar to guide students of law for pursuing successful career

The Lawyers and Jurists Foundation has initiated a digital webinar series on "Road Map from Legal Studies to a Successful Career" aiming to provide guidelines to the students of law for pursuing a successful career in the future. The first episode of the series was completed on Friday.

The programme was inaugurated by Barrister AM Masum, advocate, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and the founder of The Lawyers and Jurists Foundation.

He pointed out the concerning issues for the students of law, which includes equipping and training the students of law by the academics for coping up with the changing digital world, the role of Bar Council and Bar Association in facilitating the apprentice lawyers and the burning issue of ensuring job.

Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus (Kazal), advocate, Supreme Court, and a secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, shared his personal experience behind his struggle to become a successful legal practitioner. He emphasised prioritising studies from the early stage of student life and being dedicated and honest as a practitioner.

Considering the sufferings of the current students of law to further pursue their career in the legal profession and the delayed enrolment process, he proposed that Bangladesh Bar Council should proactively take initiatives for accommodating the students of law into the legal profession.

He also suggested providing incentives for newcomers based on merit. He strongly vouched for ensuring a corruption-free environment for the prospective legal practitioners.

Barrister Rasheed Ahmed, the executive vice president and head of Legal Affairs and Recovery Division of Brac Bank Limited, defined the corporate environment and expectation in the process of recruitment. He has emphasised academic excellence, passion and commitment for entering the profession and recommended for developing students' negotiation capacity, drafting, vocabulary skills and personal grooming through training by the university.

Roksana Akhter, the chairman of Department of Law at Cumilla University, said the university is committed to grooming up the students and willing to facilitate them in all ways to help them have a successful career and become a responsible active citizen of the Country.

Professor Dr Emran Kabir Chowdhury, vice chancellor of Comilla University, talked about policy, planning and budget of Cumilla University and pledged for arranging training, seminars, and career counselling sessions for the students of law to help them cope up with the advanced technologies and changing world.

He added that students should enrich their knowledge and capacities utilising the existing resources. He also proposed for evaluative internship opportunities for the graduates of law and requested the professionals to help them in the process.

The programme was streamed live from the Foundation's Facebook page as well as its YouTube channel, LinkedIn and Twitter account.

The Webinar was hosted by Humayra Noor, advocate, District and Session Judges Court, Dhaka and an International Civil-Commercial mediator.
