A BNP leader in Shariatpur was attacked today (5 June) by unidentified men, amid ongoing tension over the recently announced district committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

The victim, Ruhul Amin Munshi, publicity secretary of Shariatpur district BNP, was beaten in front of Shariatpur Government College while returning home on a motorcycle with his wife, Palong Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Helal Uddin told The Business Standard.

"No formal complaint has been filed yet regarding the assault on the BNP leader. He has been sent to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment. We will take necessary action once a complaint is received," he said.

"Shariatpur has been tense for the past few days due to disputes over the formation of the new Chhatra Dal committee. To maintain law and order, additional police have been deployed, and regular patrols are ongoing to ensure the situation remains under control," the OC added.

Speaking to TBS from his hospital bed, Ruhul Amin said, "Some of us were working to resolve the dispute over the JCD committee on behalf of the district BNP. While returning home with my wife, a group of armed men attacked us near Dhanuka area. I want a proper investigation and justice."

Locals and district BNP leaders, however, said a group of JCD activists — protesting the newly announced 35-member convening committee — intercepted Munshi, forcibly pulled him off his motorcycle, and beat him severely. His motorcycle was later set on fire.

Locals rescued the injured leader and took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. Later, he was referred to Dhaka.

According to BNP sources, the incident stems from internal unrest following the central JCD's new committee announcement, which drew immediate protests from a rival faction demanding its cancellation.

On 3 June, the same dispute had led to a violent clash between the two BNP groups, leaving at least 15 injured, including police personnel and passersby. Ruhul Amin was actively involved with one of the factions during that clash, which allegedly provoked today's attack.

The BNP's Shariatpur unit has strongly condemned the attack and called for swift justice.
