A local leader of the Swechchhasebak Dal was killed during a violent clash between two rival groups in the Chhoto Darogar Hat area under Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram last night (29 May).

The incident occurred around 8:00pm in ward no-2 under Baraiyadhala Union of the upazila.

The deceased, Md Kalim Uddin, 38, was the proposed secretary of the Swechchhasebak Dal committee for ward no-5 in East Lalanagar village.

Confirming the matter, Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mojibur Rahman said preliminary information suggests the clash erupted over a business-related dispute.

Kalim's body has been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy, the OC added.

Locals and eyewitnesses reported that tensions had been building between Kalim's group and a rival faction over business in the Chhoto Darogar Hat market area for quite some time.

Last night, the opposing group allegedly launched a sudden attack yielding sharp weapons, leaving Kalim critically injured.

Two others, including a man named Saddam, also sustained serious injuries during the attack.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the attackers reportedly tried to launch another assault.

Kalim Uddin was later declared dead by on-duty doctors at the hospital.

However, Md Morsalin, former president of the Swechchhasebak Dal's Chattogram North district unit, alleged that Kalim was killed in a targeted attack by drug dealers.

He claimed the attack occurred because Kalim had been opposing drug-related activities in the area.

Police are currently investigating the incident, and additional security personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
