Photos of a sinkhole, suddenly appearing on a street in the capital, went viral on social media early yesterday (27 March).

The sudden appearance of the mysterious hole on Dhanmondi's Sat Masjid Road raised many questions and theories.

Initially small, it had expanded significantly by the afternoon, sparking concerns among city residents.

Speaking to The Business Standard today, Saiful Islam Joy, executive engineer (civil) of Dhaka South City Corporation Region-1, said, "As soon as the hole was detected, we closed off the road. Fortunately, no accidents occurred.

"Today, the hole has been filled and the road is now safe for vehicular movement."

When asked about the cause of the hole, he said, "A few days ago, DPDC [Dhaka Power Distribution Company] laid a utility line beneath the road, which reportedly damaged a pipeline of Wasa [Water Supply and Sewerage Authority].

"Water leaking from the damaged pipe washed away the underlying soil and sand, which likely led to the hole. After repairing the Wasa line, we refilled the area to make the road usable again."

Saiful also informed that no other sinkholes have been reported in the surrounding areas.
