The Border Security Force (BSF) of India pushed 23 individuals into Bangladesh through the Kushkhali border in Satkhira this morning (27 May), according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Abdullah Al Masum, assistant director of Satkhira 33rd BGB battalion, said, "BSF has pushed in 23 people. They have been rescued and kept at the headquarters. Their names and identities are being verified."

The individuals are currently in custody of the 33rd BGB battalion. Further details will be provided later, said BGB.

Recently, tension has been rising between the two nations over growing incidents of people being forcibly pushed into Bangladesh from India, labelling them as 'Bangladeshi'.

Despite formal diplomatic protests lodged by Dhaka, the push-in incidents have continued in several border points.

Earlier this morning (27 May), during an event in Rajshahi, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the government has urged India to follow proper procedures when returning individuals believed to be Bangladeshi citizens.

"We have protested the push-ins at the border," he told reporters. "We have told India to send Bangladeshis back through proper channels. If they do, and if the individuals are our citizens, we will accept them. But they are not doing that."

According to media reports, over 300 people were pushed into Bangladesh between 4 May and 15 May from India.

In recent development, over 100 people were sent across the border in various districts on Wednesday and Thursday (21 and 22 May), according to BGB sources.
