Traffic at a standstill amid multiple protests on city streets
Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain continue sit-in demanding immediate swearing-in of the BNP leader as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation and resignation of advisers Asif Mahmud and Mahfuj Alam
As protests by various groups erupt on the streets of the capital for another day, traffic came to a standstill in some areas especially Shahbagh, Kakrail and Jatrabari .
Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain staged a sit-in demanding immediate swearing-in of the BNP leader as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation today (22 May). The sit-in took place at Matsya Bhaban and Kakrail intersections from 10am onwards. Despite the High Court ruling in their favour and paving the way for Ishraque swearing-in as mayor of Dhaka South, they continued their sit-in programme demanding the resignation of advisers Asif Mahmud and Mahfuj Alam.
Meanwhile, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged a sit-in in front of Hotel InterContinental and Shahbag intersection protesting the negligence in the trial of the killers of one of their leaders, Shahriar Alam Shammo, from 11am onwards.

This created heavy traffic congestion on Karwan Bazar-Farmgate route and roads adjacent to Shahbagh.
Meanwhile, the National Citizen Party is set to bring out a protest rally at Jatrabari intersection at 4:30pm demanding reorganising the Election Commission and holding local government elections.
As a result, commuters should avoid Jatrabari intersection and use alternative routes to make it to their destinations.
