Loan scam: Appellate Division rejects Hallmark Group Chairperson Jesmine's bail plea

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has denied bail to Jesmine Islam, the chairperson of Hallmark Group, in a case involving the embezzlement of Tk85.87 crore from Janata Bank.
The bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order today (19 May). Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal appeared for Jesmine, while Advocate Md Asif Hasan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) during the hearing.

Following the High Court's ruling, Jesmine appealed to the apex court seeking bail.
According to ACC lawyer Asif Hasan, the case involves the embezzlement of Tk85.87 crore from Janata Bank through fake letters of credit (LCs).
On 10 March 2019, the High Court initially granted Jesmine bail by issuing a rule. However, the ACC appealed that decision, and on 16 June 2019, the Appellate Division revoked her bail and ordered her to surrender within four weeks.
Jesmine later surrendered to the authorities. She again sought bail from the High Court.
Later, the High Court on 30 August 2022 rejected the bail petition. Finally, she filed a bail petition with the Supreme Court against the rejection order of the high court.
