Online payment gateway transaction limit increased for exporters

Bangladesh Bank has eased the transaction limit set for online payment gateways for service exporters to $10,000 per transaction, from the existing $5000.

It will enable exporters to benefit more from online payment gateway service providers such as PayPal, said a Bangladesh Bank circular on Thursday.

However, other guidelines for online payment gateway service providers remain the same.

"This is good news. But the limit should be eased further because many Bangladeshi freelancers are now earning a lot," said Mahfuzur Rahman, general secretary of the Bangladesh Freelancer Development Society.

Bangladesh Bank has increased this limit for services such as data entry or data processing, off-shore IT services, and business process outsourcing.

Online payment gateways have emerged as a popular mode of e-commerce transaction. The central bank's decision will enable service exporters to receive overseas payments through online platforms such as Paypal, Money Bookers, Best Payment Gateway and Virtual Pay.
