More than 200 workers of a garment factory in Gazipur's Kadda area fell ill today (17 May) after reportedly drinking water supplied at the workplace.

Following the incident, the factory was declared closed for the day.

The affected factory, International Classic Composite Limited (ICC), located under Bason Police Station of Gazipur Metropolitan City, employs around 3,400 workers.

According to police and workers, employees began their shifts as usual in the morning. Shortly after drinking water at the factory, some began experiencing stomach pain and diarrhoea. The number of sick workers quickly rose to over 200.

The factory authorities, along with the workers, arranged treatment for the affected individuals at various local private hospitals.

Superintendent of Police AKM Zahirul Islam of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 confirmed the incident.

"After joining work in the morning, several workers began feeling unwell after consuming the supplied water. As the number of patients increased, the authorities declared a holiday for the day," he said.

He added that they are coordinating with the factory management to ensure proper medical care for the workers.

"If anyone's condition worsens, arrangements will be made for advanced treatment. The situation is currently under control," he added.
