CCC, South Korean firm collaborate on waste-to-gas project to tackle urban pollution
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korean firm B&F to generate usable gas from municipal waste, marking a major step forward in sustainable urban development.
The MoU was signed on Tuesday (13 May) at the CCC headquarters in Tigerpass, in the presence of CCC Mayor Shahadat Hossain, CCC Secretary Ashraful Amin, and B&F representatives including Major Nasim Uddin, Nofil Tamim Khan, VW Park, and Advocate Tarannum Binte Nasim.
"This project offers a sustainable solution to Chattogram's long-standing waste management challenges. By converting waste into energy, we are entering a new era of urban service delivery," said Mayor Hossain during the ceremony.

As part of the agreement, B&F will first conduct a feasibility study, reads a press release.
If the project proves viable, the company will extract gas from landfill waste, which will then be sold to companies such as Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited.
According to Advocate Nasim, CCC will not be required to invest financially. Instead, the city corporation will earn a share of the profits, creating both environmental and economic benefits without straining public resources.
This innovative initiative is expected to address several urban challenges, including Chattogram's mounting waste problem and environmental degradation, while also contributing to Bangladesh's clean energy goals. As the country's second-largest city, Chattogram produces thousands of tonnes of waste daily, much of which ends up in unmanaged landfills.
If implemented successfully, the project will reduce methane emissions, promote renewable energy, and support the development of smart, environmentally resilient cities.
