Seven policemen, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Chougacha Police Station, were injured in an attack by unidentified locals during an operation to arrest a suspect named in a case in Jashore yesterday (6 May).

The incident took place this evening in Makapur village of the upazila while a team went to arrest Siam, an accused in a case filed with the Chougacha Police Station, the station's OC Anwar Hossain, who is among the injured, told The Business Standard.

The injured police members said they went to Makapur village with a force led by Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan Maruf and Sub-Inspector Uttam to arrest Siam.

The injured cops said after Siam was arrested, some unidentified locals obstructed the police work and tried to snatch the accused. On receiving the information, OC Anwar Hossain went to the spot with additional force.

They also said later, on the way back with the accused, the miscreants again attacked the police members, including the OC. Among them, ASI Lavlu was seriously injured.

Anwarul Abedin, medical officer of the Upazila Health Complex, said seven policemen went to the health complex for treatment. "Of them, ASI Lavlu is being treated for a serious head injury and is admitted. The others have all received first aid."
