Detained suspect attacks two cops with hammer in Kushtia, one sustains head injury

A man detained as a suspect in a case assaulted two policemen with a hammer while being taken to the police station in Mirpur Upazila of Kushtia last night (2 May).
The incident occurred near Palpara Bazar in the upazila at around 8:30pm, Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mominul Islam confirmed.
One of the policemen, Constable Rustam Ali, sustained a head injury and was taken to the upazila health complex for treatment.
"The suspect attacked the policemen while he was being taken to the police station. A constable sustained a minor head injury. The suspect is now in police custody," said OC Mominul.
According to police and local sources, Sub-Inspector (SI) Monirul Islam and Constable Rustam Ali Amla Police Camp were escorting 25-year-old Ashik on a motorcycle from the Amla Hothat Para area to Mirpur Police Station.
As they were approaching Palpara Bazar, Ashik suddenly shouted and asked the officers to stop the motorcycle. When SI Monirul stopped the vehicle, the suspect took out a hammer from his waist, tucked under his clothing, and struck Monirul on the head, breaking his helmet.
He then hit Constable Rustam on the head with the same hammer, causing an injury. Ashik, however, failed to flee and was taken into custody.
Locals rushed to the scene and provided first aid to Rustam. Additional police officers from Mirpur station later arrived and took Rustam to the upazila health complex.
It was not learnt immediately how Ashik managed to keep the hammer on his person even after he was detained by police.
